Domain squatting or cybersquatting is the term used for someone who registers a domain that infringes on another’s intellectual property or trademark. Some squatters attempt to sell the names back to rightful owners for a profit, while others use them to deceive web searchers and send them to a website they were not intending to visit.

Over the years, a number of celebrities have recaptured their own names that were being used as domain names. In most cases, the registrant (the cyber squatter) was attempting to profit on the celebrity’s fame.

But what if you’re not famous (or famous enough) to argue that your own name is a trademarked term?

Political Scam Sites And How To Handle Them

spam political websitesRecently, the National Republican Congressional Committee created a number of fake websites for Democratic candidates that initially appear to be legitimate, but are actually negative to the candidate in the text and have donation forms that send funds to the NRCC.

Here is a quick summary of the issue:

Call them what you will, but these are scam sites. They target supporters of a candidate and trick them into giving money to their opponent.

Should people be more vigilant about where they donate online? Of course. But just because you can trick someone doesn’t make it right or ethical. In the long run, this may actually hurt online political donations if people feel they cannot verify safe or ‘real’ fundraising websites.

In response to criticism, the NRCC recently changed some donation pages to make it clearer to potential contributors that their money wasn’t going to the Democrats pictured but instead to Republicans.

Unfortunately, this type type of shady activity will likely become more common going forward – from all sides of the political spectrum.

So, what can you do if you, as a candidate, are a target of a fake site?

Recover Your Opposition’s Deleted Stuff

Political campaigns often post things online that can come back to haunt them. If this happens to one of your opponents, you’ll want to leverage any online snafus as much as possible. To do this, you’ll want to have records of the material in question. Of course, the best way to recover this material is to first preserve a record of it in the first place. Here are some techniques your campaign should regularly use to keep tabs on your opposition – and to recover information, if necessary.
